The exhibition was mentioned as one of 5 contributions not to be missed in the Biennale in La Presse (in French)
Anouk Verviers’s art practice encompasses videos, performances, sound works, and
installations, often created with long-term collaborators. Together, they adopt a fluid,
experimental approach that circumvents ways of being or working devised by systems of
power—be they artistic, economic, or medical.
Verviers presents the first and second chapter of a dystopian trilogy in which she examines
chronic pain experienced by women and non-binary people. In the first video, performers build
columns out of cob, referring to architectures of power, but that also represents the mutual
support they give each other as they rewrite the story of their exhaustion. The narrative is
punctuated by, among other things, a fictional conversation between an anonymous character
and the medical-industrial complex. In the second video collage illustrating a four-thousand-
year-old story, rockslides act as metaphors for endometriosis. In Verviers’s work, those dealing
with pain have merged with their treatment and transformed themselves into cyborg feminists
who have the power to act not only on their pain but, more importantly, with it.
Exhibition produced in partnership with Dazibao. The artist received support from the PRIM-Dazibao production-distribution residency.
The exhibition is made possible thanks to the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
